The Media and Communications major

Studies in Media and Communications within the University of Melbourne Bachelor of Arts provides a pathway to local and global media and communications industries. It gives you the opportunity to study the theory, interpretation, practice and history of the media and the communications technology it utilises.

If you elect to study this major, you can also choose another major or a minor from over 30 study areas.


The Media and Communications major will:

  • Enable you to develop a comprehensive overview of the media’s place in today’s society, economy and culture, with an emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Provide you with the fundamental written communication skills required by successful journalists and other media professionals.
  • Give you an understanding of new communication technologies and their impact on the fast changing global media environment.
  • Train you to think across media – a skill of increasing importance for the next generation of media professionals and media researchers.
  • Assist you to capitalise on the value of an international and interdisciplinary approach to the study of Media and Communications.
  • Encourage you to develop the skills to publish articles in online media outlets and print publications, including the University’s renowned student magazine, Farrago.
