Pathway explained

The Arts Law pathway offered at The University of Melbourne is unique among Australian universities.

You will attain an undergraduate qualification in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a graduate qualification in the Melbourne JD (Juris Doctor), standing out from your peers.

It is the most flexible Arts Law pathway offered in Australia, allowing you to study humanities, social sciences, languages and other disciplines outside during your degree to pursue all of your passions.

Develop your job-readiness by accessing student experience opportunities including local and global volunteering placements, fieldwork and discipline-specific internships offered by the Faculty of Arts and Melbourne Law School.

Our Arts Law graduates are in-demand and successful in securing employment across a diverse range of legal and non-legal professions. You will develop career-ready skills including problem-solving, analytical thinking, communication expertise, leadership and creativity.

Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) is an undergraduate degree that provides you with a crucial foundation of creative and critical thinking through writing, research and analysis.

It will build your interdisciplinary knowledge, community leadership and cultural awareness to prepare you for a rapidly changing global workplace.

You can choose from a variety of majors and minors, including languages, politics, criminology, philosophy and media communications.

The BA also offers a Law and Justice minor to give students a foundational understand of the rule of law and how law can be applied in a range of social, historical and political contexts. This is not compulsory for entry into the Melbourne JD.

As part of the BA, you will study breadth subjects to expand your personal and professional skills. Breadth subjects come from outside the Faculty and include disciplines such as agriculture, environment, law, medicine and visual arts.

Outside of your studies, you can access a wide range of enrichment opportunities, such as study abroad, student clubs and societies and volunteering experiences. You will be able to build life-long friendships, professional networks and be part of a vibrant community at Melbourne.

The Melbourne JD (Juris Doctor)

The Melbourne JD (Juris Doctor) is a graduate program which equips Arts Law graduates to take a leading role in contemporary legal practice, the business world, government and community organisations.

You will develop strong core legal and professional skills, learn through practical opportunities in real-world settings, and have the opportunity to study abroad.

Be surrounded by a supportive community of student peers, Melbourne Law School alumni, mentors and teachers.

Take part in various extra-curricular activities, competitions and events run by the Melbourne Law School to further your professional development.
