Melbourne Arts has an international research reputation and holds strategic alliances with leading universities and eminent research bodies around the world. Arts hosts the second largest research cohort across the University and is home to numerous specialist interdisciplinary research centres with outstanding success in winning highly competitive Australian research council grants.

We aim to attract high calibre research students and staff who inspire original and innovative research across a wide range of disciplines. Our research funding and links allow our students to work with leading academics on well-resourced, high profile research projects in an internationally recognised learning environment.

Masters by Research

The Masters by Research (MA) provides students with an opportunity to carry out sustained and independent research. A key attribute of the program is the ability to define and manage a research project characterised by originality and independence under expert supervision. Duration: 1.5 years, full-time study

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The Doctor of Philosophy degree allows students to undertake a substantial piece of independent and sustained research on an original topic under academic supervision. The research is expected to make a significantly new and innovative contribution to the discipline. In scope, the thesis differs from a Research Masters thesis chiefly by its deeper and more comprehensive treatment of its subject. Duration: 3 years full-time study.
