Course Structure
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) requires the successful completion of 300 points or 24 subjects in total (eight subjects at each year level, with each subject generally worth 12.5 points). You will complete 100 points of study at each of first, second and third year levels. First year In the first year, you will be required to complete two subjects (25 points) from a choice of eight interdisciplinary foundation subjects. These subjects draw on a range of study areas and academic expertise. They are designed to provide you with an introduction to central Arts concepts, ideas and principles, to assist in your academic transition to the University and to enable you to make informed study choices for the remainder of your degree. Majors and minors You will also have the opportunity to complete majors or minors chosen from a broad range of Arts options. A major or minor is a specialisation in an area of study, requiring the completion of a specified number of subjects at each year level. You can choose to complete a major in one or even two areas of study, or elect to complete a major (100 points of study) and a minor (75 points of study). Completion of major and minor specialisations will be acknowledged on your official transcript of results. Breadth Studies The Melbourne BA ‘breadth' component means that a quarter of your Arts degree (usually 6 subjects, 75 points) is undertaken in studies outside of the Faculty of Arts. This complementary study experience in disciplines such as environments, science, biomedicine, commerce and music provides enhanced contextual understanding of your Arts major studies in a tailored, individual study program. |
