Concurrent programs on offer

You can pursue study in another area through a concurrent diploma alongside your undergraduate degree to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge.

Undergraduate students will have access to a range of diplomas to enable them to complete an in-depth sequence of study in disciplines such as mathematics, languages, music and ICT.

A Diploma will usually one year to the total duration of your study, but in some circumstances it will be possible to complete a diploma within the within the three years of the degree.

The diploma normally consists of a sequence of first, second and third year subjects in a relevant area of study.

Diploma of Languages

The Diploma in Languages (DipLang) enables students to gain a diploma in language study while completing an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne.The School of Languages and Linguistics and the Asia Institute at the Faculty of Arts offer the following language study areas through the DipLang:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Hebrew
  • Indonesian
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Swedish

Language study is offered at all levels - from beginner to advanced.

Application and selection for the concurrent diploma in languages takes place during the re-enrolment period of the third year of the new generation degree.

Diploma in Music (Practical)

Recognising that not all students interested in musical study wish to commit themselves to professional training in music, the University of Melbourne offers a concurrent Diploma in Music (Practical). Applications for entry into the Diploma should be made directly to the Faculty of Music upon acceptance into the student's main degree program. The Diploma in Music (Practical) will usually add one year to the total duration of the student's main degree course, and can only be awarded on the successful completion of the student's main degree.

U21 Global Issues Program

This program, available as a four-subject Certificate or an eight-subject Diploma, is a unique award offered exclusively to members of the Universitas 21 (U21) undergraduate community.

The Global Issues Program is designed to meet the needs of students who are considering careers that require an international perspective. Students will gain knowledge of the current principles relating to globalisation and an understanding of the interconnectedness between individuals, societies and countries.

Seven U21 universities collaborate in the teaching of the program, which offers collaborative learning in an international setting, drawing on the capacity of the participating institutions.

The program’s unique format and delivery distinguishes it from other courses. It is a multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional program with mixed delivery, including online and on-campus subjects. It allows students to enrich their degree with components taken from other research-led universities with international reputations, guaranteeing benchmarking against national and international best practice.

This course is not registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) and cannot be offered to international students that require a student visa to study in Australia.
